Portfolio Project Genre #1

Genre #1 Neo-Noir Crime Thriller

Okay so this week we had to start thinking about our film opening portfolio and man, I just immediately went dark. Like I wanted something with tension, betrayal, shady vibes, the whole Neo-Noir Crime Thriller energy. Normally I watch rom-coms or light stuff but nah, this had to be dark. I’m talking breakfast turning into murder, boss giving orders over text, all casual until, boom, plot twist.

So Neo-Noir Crime Thriller is basically all about a morally messy main character, shadows, city vibes, and secrets. You want tension dripping off the screen. Movies that are like this? Drive, Se7en, The Dark Knight. I know right, heavy hitters. They show you how to play with pacing and visuals to freak the audience out without saying a word.

My film is short, 2 minutes, but I want that same tension. Start with normal eggs, breakfast, texting then slowly something feels off. Guy’s putting on a hat, hoodie, gun, shoes, montage style, close-ups on hands and phone… audience feels it. It’s subtle but it’s tense. Shadows, low light, and close-ups make the normal morning feel like a trap.

Drive totally gave me ideas on slow build and sudden violence. Se7en showed me how morally grey characters make you squirm. I want the audience thinking “okay… this guy’s sketchy” without me saying it.

Other inspo: The Killing, Collateral, Zodiac. Dark, tense, morally messy, perfect for a 2-min opener.
