Hi Cambridge. From this point on, my blog posts will focus on the journey of creating my Cambridge Final Project. Everything I’ve written so far has helped me explore key concepts that will shape a strong, thoughtful, and engaging film. I won’t lie officially starting this transition feels a little intimidating because it makes everything suddenly feel real. But with the research I’ve done and the skills I’ve been building, I’m confident I can take this on.
To kick off this next stage, my class and I began studying film openings and how essential it is to establish purpose right from the first moments of a movie. We explored different approaches filmmakers use to hook an audience and set the tone for what’s to come, which will guide how I craft my own opening.
The first approach I’m most interested in exploring is developing context and background. For a two‑minute film introduction, establishing context feels like a natural way to set up the rest of the story without forcing information onto the audience. It also works across a wide range of genres, making it a flexible option rather than one tied to a specific style. Another reason I’m drawn to this approach is that it allows for creative experimentation with time, structure, and pacing, which can make the opening feel less linear and more engaging. While context is usually woven into films at various points, using it as the central strategy for an opening sequence offers a fresh way to integrate it more directly.
The second approach I would consider is developing character. I’m especially drawn to this method because it offers a lot of room for creativity and innovation. Building a character relies heavily on elements such as costume design, the character’s interactions with their environment, and dialogue all of which help bring the character to life. Focusing on character development also gives me a clearer sense of what the audience should understand about the character from the very beginning, which helps guide the rest of the film’s direction.
